Sholay is an Indian film directed by Ramesh Sippy. It is the biggest hit in the history of Bollywood, India's Hindi film industry. Released on 15 August 1975, it stars Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan. The movie, shot in the rocky terrain of Ramanagara, Karnataka, is the story of two petty criminals hired to capture a ruthless dacoit by the name of Gabbar Singh.
Sholay is the highest grossing film of all time in Indian cinema. The movie has earned Rs. 768,81,00,000, equivalent to US$ 160 million, after adjusting for inflation. When first released, the film was declared a commercial disaster. Word of mouth convinced movie-goers to give the film a chance and soon it became a box-office phenomenon. It ran for 286 weeks straight (more than five years) in one Mumbai theatre, the Minerva. Sholay racked up a still standing record 60 golden jubilees across India and doubled its original gross over reruns during the late 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Sholay was the first film in the history of Indian cinema to celebrate a silver jubilee (25 weeks) at over a hundred theaters across India.
In 1999 BBC India declared it the "Film of the Millennium"; Indiatimes movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films.[4] The same year, the judges of the 50th annual Filmfare Awards awarded it with a special award called Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years.
3 Idiots
3 Idiots is a 2009 Bollywood comedy film directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with a screenplay by Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It was loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. 3 Idiots stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Omi Vaidya, Parikshit Sahni and Boman Irani.
Upon release, the film broke all opening box office records in India. It was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend in India and has the highest opening day collections for a Bollywood film. It also has the record for highest net collections in the first week for a Bollywood film. Within 10 days of it's release, the film crossed the INR 1 billion mark in India and became the first film of 2009 to do so. The film also created a new box office record for a release in the last quarter of a year (October to December), breaking the previous record set by Ghajini. It is also the highest-grossing film to be released in the second half of the year (July to December), breaking the previous record also held by Ghajini.
3 Idiots has become the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of all time in India. The film set a box office record for the Indian film industry, grossing Rs 400 crore (US$ 87 million) worldwide.It is expected to be the first Indian film to be officially released on YouTube, within 12 weeks of releasing in theatres on March 25, 2010. The film also went on to win many awards, winning six Filmfare Awards including best film and best director, and ten Star Screen Awards.
